- Ways to Use Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) Funds
With the end of the year fast approaching we thought we would remind you that any leftover FSA funds after the grace period has expired (March 15, 2012) will be forfeited. So here are a few creative ways to spend down your FSA:
- Review the expansive list of eligible expenses. FSA funds can be used for a variety of health care expenses.
- Don't forget to submit your outstanding receipts. Gather up and submit any outstanding receipts such as for prescription or office copays.
- Schedule routine check-ups. Try to squeeze in that trip to the dentist or eye doctor to help use up your FSA funds.
- Ask your doctor for prescriptions for over-the-counter (OTC) medications used to treat an illness. Due to changes included in the health reform act, OTC medications cannot be reimbursed through an FSA without a doctor's prescription.
- Invest in wellness. You can use FSA funds for smoking cessation and weight loss counseling (may need a letter of medical necessity with the claim).
- Gas and transportation fees to and from eligible medical, dental, and vision appointments are eligible for reimbursement. The mileage rate for 2011 was 19 cents/mile for January 1 to June 30, and 23.5 cents/mile for July 1 to December 31.
If you have any questions or need assistance with your FSA, please contact Larry Frank in the Statewide Benefits Office at 302-739-8331.
- UPDATE: Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Mileage Rate
Effective July 1, 2011 the IRS has declared that the allowable standard mileage reimbursement rate when using a car or motorcycle to obtain care has increased to 23.5 cents per mile. The reimbursement rate from January 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011 was 19 cents per mile.
This applies if a health care FSA participant submits a claim for travel to and/or from health care providers, hospitals, pharmacies and other places when receiving eligible medical care.
